FânFest Roșia Montană – annual hay festival (fân means hay in Romanian) organised around August 15.
Initiated in 2004 as a protest music festival, opposing the destructive mining plans for the area, it has grown into a well-known complex international cultural festival held yearly in high summer, at the end of the hay harvesting season, bringing ca. 7000 people in Roșia Montană to know it better and attend the variety of events on the programme – guided tours, theatre performances, conferences, workshops, debates, film projections, literature readings, bike tours, sports events, music concerts and much more.
The festival was associated to hay harvesting, the most conspicuous of the traditional pastoral activities of the area, so as to emphasise a present day local life-supporting activity and a possible sustainable future, different from mining.
FânFest 2015 will take place between August 13 and 16.
