Port Carlisle: A historical research

North of England Civic Trust has been working with a group of local residents in Port Carlisle since June 2015. We have undertaken historical research about the village and the people who used to live there – this included a visit to the local archives at Carlisle where we were able to view original documents relating to the building of the canal and railway to Port Carlisle.
In November we took part in the ‘Solway Hidden Heritage Forum’ which featured as range of speakers and covered topics such as Clay Dabbins on the Solway, the archaeology of Holme Cultram Abbey and, of course, a talk about Port Carlisle. This was followed by a walk around the village looking at the built heritage features and the amazing coastal views!
The next part of our project will be a sharing day at Port Carlisle Chapel on the 30th of January, where we will share what we have learnt so far and also be inviting local residents to share any artefacts or stories they have about the village.
