Westmeath County Council has worked in collaboration with ‘ENtopia – Our places in Ireland’ to produce documentation as part of the pilot project for ENtopia in Ireland to produce a community engaged programme for improving the economic potential of the area. This includes the planning of projects to attract visitors and investors to the area, and to work with village communities on ways of attracting more people to Northern Westmeath in the heart of Ireland’s Midland Lakes area.
The project is named “The Children of Lir Country” in recognition that the key location of this religious legend in Ireland is based on Lough Deravarragh. The name establishes an identity for one of the most quietly beautiful areas in Ireland with lakes, glacially-formed uplands, and a scattering of villages around the area with a small heritage town, Castlepollard, at its centre. This programme now sets out to establish its engagement over the next three years in a community participation, seeking funding from the local partnership of LEADER and contributions from project the County Council.
